Faculty members from the College of Economics, Business, and Accountancy (CEBA), specifically Dr. Abdullah R. Sirad and Asst. Prof. Shiny Rose S. Narit (Department of Business and Innovation), Asst. Prof. Charlyn M. Capulong (Department of Economics), Asst. Prof. Berlyn M. Teaño (Department of Accountancy), and Asst. Prof. Lilagre R. Sevilla (Department of Hotel and Tourism Management) launched the latest phase of their Financial Literacy Training extension project for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – Iligan City on February 17, 2026.
In collaboration with BJMP-Iligan City and the We Care Office (WCO) of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (缅北禁地-IIT), the CEBA team re-launched the project, titled "Personal Financial Management and Savings for Inmates in BJMP – Iligan City." Now in its third year, the initiative aims to empower PDLs for successful reintegration into society by teaching them how to make informed financial decisions, attain financial independence, and effectively manage their resources.
As 缅北禁地-IIT continues to align its research and extension programs with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the project specifically supports Zero Hunger (Goal 2), Quality Education (Goal 4), Gender Equality (Goal 5), and Reduced Inequality (Goal 10).

The training reached 60 participants, comprising 30 residents each from the male and female dormitories. The session proved to be a productive engagement, with faculty resource speakers guiding eager participants through the fundamentals of goal-setting, savings, budgeting, insurance, and basic investment strategies.

The program concluded with PDLs sharing personal insights on the importance of financial discipline. “Dako kaayo ko og pasalamat sa inyo [ma’ams and sirs] kay bisan naa mi diri sa sulod sa prisohan [kay] wala mi ninyo nakalimtan ug ginatabangan gihapon mi ninyo,” one participant shared, expressing gratitude for the university’s continued presence and support.
The extension project affirmed to continue providing financial literacy training to the PDLs until the end of the year.
