by The RISE Team | Mar 02 2026

Project RISE of Ãå±±½ûµØ-IIT successfully concluded its 12-session training workshop, “Enhancing Early Literacy: A Training on Reading Pedagogy and Instructional Materials Development for Grade 2 Teachers,” through a meaningful two-day series of activities that included teaching demonstrations, a reflection session, and a formal culminating program.

Teaching Demonstration at Iligan City North Central School

On February 20, 2026, Grade 2 teacher-participants conducted full-day teaching demonstrations at Iligan City North Central School. The activities were held at Dr. Glend John R. Cananea’s Classroom of the Future, which served as the primary venue for the day’s sessions.

The ten Grade 2 teachers—Jane P. Tomawis (Iligan City North Central School), Paz Elvi Ll. Ramo (Abuno Elementary School), Jeda M. Parcon (Del Carmen Integrated School), Norhaya D. Dialem (Tambacan Elementary School), Karen Mae L. Samson (Angelico Medina Memorial School), Allyza Kim B. Librado (Luinab Elementary School), Elvira L. Padilla (Cabili Village Elementary School), Reggie Mae M. Rico (Bagong Silang Elementary School), Shiela Mae P. Magadan (Victor G. Guevara Memorial School), and Ivony S. Bihag (Villa Verde Elementary School)—showcased structured lesson plans, reading strategies, and instructional materials developed throughout the training workshop.

These demonstrations, conducted before selected Grade 2 learners, reflected learner-centered and research-based approaches to early literacy instruction.

The sessions were observed and evaluated by Dr. Lucia G. Maminta, Education Program Supervisor (DepEd–Iligan); Dr. Lourd Greggory D. Crisol (English Department, CASS); Dr. Ada S. Baraguer (Integrated Developmental School–CED); and Asst. Prof. Vita S. Caparoso (DPRE–CED and RISE Team member). Principals from partner schools were also in attendance to support their teachers and to observe how the five-day lesson plans and RISE strategies were implemented in the classroom.

The demonstrations were facilitated by Dr. Rizalina G. Gomez, with feedback led by Dr. Ruben L. Abucayon. Technical support and preparation of instructional materials were provided by Mr. Vincent Q. Malales and Mr. Azidin Paul P. Gadiane.

Reflection and Processing Session

On the morning of February 21, teachers gathered at the College of Education ICT Laboratory for a reflection and processing session. Participants shared insights from their teaching demonstrations, identified strengths and areas for improvement, and discussed ways to further refine their instructional practices. The session, facilitated by Assoc. Prof. J-roel B. Semilla and Assoc. Prof. Onnah Pierre P. Talle, reinforced a culture of reflective teaching, collaboration, and continuous professional growth.

Culminating Program

In the afternoon, Project RISE held its culminating program at the CED Amphitheater. The event, facilitated by Dr. Ciedelle N. Grageda, was attended by partner school principals.

Dr. Evelyn I. Dominguez, Chairperson of the Department of Professional Education (CED), recognized the tireless dedication of the teachers who devoted their Saturdays to strengthening literacy instruction. Dr. Amelia T. Buan, Dean of the College of Education, reminded participants that students view their teachers as heroes, affirming that through their commitment, “every child will rise.”

A message from the Flemish Promoter, Dr. Wim Van Petegem of KU Leuven, was delivered by Dr. Shelanee Theresa P. Ruales, Local Promoter of Project RISE. He emphasized:

“RISE is more than a project; it is a movement. It is about unlocking the potential of every child and ensuring that reading becomes a doorway—not a barrier—to learning.”

Dr. Lucia G. Maminta expressed her hope that every child will become a successful reader as teachers implement these research-based approaches. She underscored that “literacy is not merely taught but cultivated,” highlighting the intentional and sustained work required to build strong readers.

Ms. Allyza Kim B. Librado, representing the Grade 2 teacher participants, delivered a message accepting the challenge of Project RISE and reaffirming their commitment to DepEd’s literacy goals.

A Meaningful 12-Session Journey

The workshop officially concluded after 12 Saturday sessions, culminating in the awarding of certificates of completion and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units. The facilitation of these units was made possible through the efforts of Dr. Lowell G. Lucero.

In the coming school year, the lesson plans and materials developed during the training will be implemented in classrooms, strengthening the reading journey of every learner. These Grade 2 teachers will continue guiding students from this year’s RISE Grade 1 cohort, ensuring continuity and sustained literacy development.

Project RISE proudly congratulates the Grade 2 teachers for their passion and dedication to advancing early literacy.
