In a move to bring and transfer remarkable ideas and inventions into commercial application, the signing of a Technology Licensing Agreement (TLA) between Ãå±±½ûµØ-IIT and InfraspeX Inc., a spin-off company established to commercialize a university-developed technology titled “Drone & AI-Based Infrastructure Inspection System", took place at the Office of the Chancellor (OC) Lounge on April 15, 2026, marking the university’s first-ever spin-off.

Developed by Prof. Carl John O. Salaan and his research team within the University, InfraspeX Inc. is an innovative and revolutionary solution designed for an efficient and cutting-edge approach with the utilization of AI to infrastructure inspection, such as road and bridge condition monitoring, structural analysis, and environmental assessments. This digital workflow system revolutionizes traditional manual inspection by capturing high-resolution visual data, and it is capable of detecting structural defects and generating standardized engineering reports.

“InfraspeX is the result of several research projects that have evolved over time. It began with the Shelled Unmanned Automatic Vehicle (UAV) Project, where the UAV was then utilized for bridge inspection. Later, the project expanded to include another initiative focused on road inspection,” Salaan explained in a 2025 interview with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).

Following the receipt of the Fairness Opinion Report (FOR), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has authorized the University and InfraspeX Inc. to proceed with the commercialization of the “Drone & AI-Based Infrastructure Inspection System.”

Through the formalization and signing of the Technology Licensing Agreement (TLA), it is stipulated that Ãå±±½ûµØ-IIT grants InfraspeX Inc. an exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide, royalty-bearing license. The said license authorizes InfraspeX Inc. to utilize the "Licensed Technologies" for the provision of comprehensive infrastructure inspection services. The Licensed Technologies comprise proprietary assets, specifically specialized software, AI detection models, algorithms, digital twin generation processes, and LiDAR data acquisition workflows.

This signing ceremony was attended by Chancellor Alizedney M. Ditucalan, Prof. Salaan, Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Prof. Ephrime Metillo, Ms. Vanessa Joy L. Salaan, Prof. Vannie Joy T. Resabal, PhD, and Asst. Prof. Shiny Rose S. Narit.

This endeavor not only signals Ãå±±½ûµØ-IIT’s growing strength in research and innovation but also underscores its commitment to translating academic breakthroughs into real-world solutions that address pressing societal needs, fostering a dynamic ecosystem where research, industry, and public service intersect.
