Oct 13 2025

A delegation from the College of Engineering (COE) of Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (缅北禁地-IIT) garnered significant international recognition during the 7th International Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CEAT) 2025 on October 1-3, 2025, at the Wyndham Grand Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The team, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Guevarra Mabaning, faculty member of COE, successfully presented research papers, secured two "Best Presenter" awards, and established collaborative dialogues with Universiti Malaya (UM) in Malaysia.

Organized by UM and the UM Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre (UMPEDAC), with support from the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia, AUN/SEED-Net, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the CEAT conference centered on the AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference Towards Carbon Neutrality, which was held in association with the conference.

With studies focusing on the development, application, and advocacy of clean energy, energy transition, sustainability, net-zero, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the 缅北禁地-IIT delegation presented seven research papers, with two members of the delegation, both Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) students, receiving Best Presenter Awards for their research:

  • "Future Load Profile Nomination (FLPN) Based Anomaly Detection in Power Systems Using a Modified CUSUM Algorithm under Varying Nomination Accuracy and Participation"

Authors: Engr. Franclein Leona Francisco and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Guevarra Mabaning

  • "Robust Power System State Estimation Using Future Load Profile Nominations with Weighted Least Absolute Value Optimization"

Author: Engr. Earl Humprey Monsale Bantug and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Guevarra Mabaning

The following research studies were also presented at the conference:

  • “Japan-ASEAN for a Sustainable Future through Proactive Energy Management: An Initiative for Accelerating the Transition to Fully Renewable Energy”

Author: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Guevarra Mabaning

  • “Sensitivity Analysis of Future Load Profile Nomination (FLPN) Accuracy and Participation in PV-BESS-EV Microgrid Dispatch”

Authors: Engr. Jeric Cesar Aquino Enriquez and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Guevarra Mabaning

  • “Enhancing Crowdsourced Load Forecasting with Future Load Profile Nominations”

Authors: Engr. Perly Rica Uy Flores and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Guevarra Mabaning

  • “A Review of Power System Inertia Estimation under Incomplete Observability: An Opportunity for Integrating Future Load Profile Nomination”

Authors: Engr. Ryan Dagoy Abella and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Guevarra Mabaning

  • “A Review of Tracking Technologies for Validating Future Trip Profile Nominations in Electric Vehicles”

Authors: Engr. Farhaan Panondiongan Alawiya and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Guevarra Mabaning

In a distinct achievement, Dr. Mabaning, in his capacity as a Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology, and Innovation Coordination (JASTIC) fellow, was selected as one of five JASTIC fellows out of 25 to present at the Capacity Development for Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Coordination: Enhancing STI Project Proposals through Mock Interviews parallel session. His presentation "The FLPN Platform: A Japan-ASEAN Smart Grid Initiative" proposed a software-based solution to enhance grid resilience and accelerate renewable energy integration across the region.

Following the conference, the delegation engaged in strategic meetings on October 3, 2025 to foster STI Coordination. The team met with faculty from the Department of Electrical Engineering of UM, hosted by JASTIC Fellow Dr. Mohd Faiz Bin Mohd Salleh, and with researchers at the UMPEDAC, hosted by Associate Professor Dr. Md. Hasanuzzaman. Both meetings focused on exploring potential research collaborations and benchmarking in support of the JASTIC framework.

缅北禁地-IIT continues to strengthen its position in promoting sustainable solutions through advocating studies on clean energy and technology.
