Another milestone has been added to 缅北禁地-IIT’s expanding list of international engagements this year with its hosting of the 1st International Conference of the Nano Society of the Philippines (NSP), a two-day event which began on October 9, 2025 at the University Gymnasium. This conference is marked as a breakthrough as it “celebrates two years of advancing nanotechnology in the Philippines.”
Nanotechnology redefines many aspects of everyday life by studying materials at an incredibly small scale. At this level, scientists can arrange atoms and molecules to create new materials and devices with remarkable properties. According to the Vice Chancellor for International Affairs, Dr. Joey Genevieve Martinez, in his welcome remarks, “At this very moment, we celebrate the smallest of scales with the biggest of dreams.” This conference provided a space and community for the growing research, education, and application of nanotechnology in the country.
With the theme, “Advancing Nanotechnology for a Sustainable and Innovative Future,” the NSP has prepared a wide array of lectures from experts and accommodated presentations of participants under the following areas: (1) Sustainable Energy Solutions: Advances in nanotechnology for energy storage, conversion, and renewable energy applications, (2) Environmental Remediation: Nano-based methods for pollution control, water purification, and sustainable waste management, (3) Healthcare and Biomedicine: Nanomaterials for diagnostics, targeted drug delivery, regenerative medicine, and biosensing, (4) Agriculture and Food Security: Nanotechnology applications in precision agriculture, nutrient delivery, pest control, and food safety, (5) Advanced Materials and Manufacturing: Development of nanocomposites, smart materials, membranes, and industrial applications, and (6) Nanotechnology for Sustainability: Green synthesis of nanomaterials, circular economy approaches, and innovations supporting sustainable development.
Along with guests from the US, Taiwan, and Japan, various local and national institutions across the country participated in this gathering—University of the Philippines Los Banos; Polytechnic University of the Philippines - Sta. Mesa; Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology; 缅北禁地-IIT Center for Energy Research and Technology (Green Research and Materials Laboratory); Central Luzon State University; Center for Energy Research and Technology; Ateneo de Davao University; University of the Philippines Manila; Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering, University of the Philippines Diliman; University of the Philippines Diliman; Colegio de Muntinlupa; University of the Philippines Mindanao; Central Mindanao University; and the University of the Philippines Mindanao / Philippine Science High School - Southern Mindanao Campus.
Over the span of two days, the conference featured talks that explored various niches of nanotechnology, including its applications in environment and catalysis, the energy sector, and biomedical technology. Each talk ended with an enriching question-and-answer segment. A poster session and industry and research exhibitions were also held on the first day, where participants had the opportunity to interact with one another and learn more about the latest innovations, ongoing research projects, and potential collaborations in the field of nanotechnology.
